An Arizona doctor was indicted last month for a health care fraud scheme that allegedly billed back over $50 million to Medicare. Dr. Linh Cao Nguyen has been charged with a 50-count indictment that spans health care fraud, False Statements Relating to a Health Care Matter, and Aggravated Identity Theft.

In a recent press release from the Department of Justice, a federal grand jury claims that Dr. Nguyen led the decade-long scheme “by submitting false claims to health care insurance programs for medical services: (1) that identified a physician as the rendering provider when Dr. Nguyen knew that the service was not completed by a physician and did not qualify for reimbursement as a physician; (2) that were not medically necessary; (3) that were billed at a higher complexity level than the actual level of care provided; and (4) that were not performed as the only legitimate service rendered was a Covid vaccination”. His mobile medical practice, which practiced across Tuscon and Peoria, had a set of staffers in Phoenix and another set of staff “that allegedly submitted false billing information remotely from Vietnam” according to local newspaper Tuscon.com.

Until the case is tried in court, the claims against Dr. Nguyen remain mere allegations and his medical license with the Arizona Medical Board maintains its good standing. However, if found guilty of these charges he could face several years in prison and lose his medical license in addition to restitution on the $30 million collected in Medicare funds.
